Extra practice

Two HTML pages from a different practice set, used here as spot-the-error exercises — the same families of mistakes (missing closing tags, text outside a cell, invalid attributes) as Question 6. No matching question paper or marks exist for these, so they’re practice only.

6_2Popular.html

The page should show a bordered table of the five popular courses (name, duration, cost, tools) with a title row. What is wrong?

Show the faults
  1. Opening table tag is broken: < border="1"> is missing the word table. Fix: <table border="1">. Without it the browser never builds a table and the closing </table> has no partner (nesting error).

  2. Title row text is not in a cell: <tr><font size="5">Popular courses</font></tr>. Text must sit inside <th> or <td>. Fix: <tr><th colspan="4"><font size="5">Popular courses</font></th></tr> so the title spans all four columns.

  3. Computer Literacy has no cell: the row reads Computer Literacy followed by s. Fix: wrap it in <td>Computer Literacy</td> so the row has four cells like the others.

HTML
<table border="1">
 <tr><th colspan="4"><font size="5">Popular courses</font></th></tr>
 <tr><th>Course Name</th><th>Duration</th><th>Cost</th><th>Tools</th></tr>
 <tr><td>Web Design</td><td>8 weeks</td><td>R2 000</td><td>HTML, CSS</td></tr>
 ...
</table>
<table border="1">
 <tr><th colspan="4"><font size="5">Popular courses</font></th></tr>
 <tr><th>Course Name</th><th>Duration</th><th>Cost</th><th>Tools</th></tr>
 <tr><td>Web Design</td><td>8 weeks</td><td>R2 000</td><td>HTML, CSS</td></tr>
 ...
</table>

Why this earns the marks

browsers silently "fix" some bad HTML, but exam marking checks the code. This is why you must view the page and read the source: a browser's error-recovery behaviour exists to make the web more forgiving for ordinary visitors, not to tell you whether your markup is actually correct, so a page that displays something reasonable on screen can still be full of exactly the faults being tested here. All three faults in this page are variations on the structural rules covered in the HTML notes — a misspelled opening tag breaks the whole container (so its matching closing tag has nothing to pair with), text sitting outside a <td>/<th> has no cell to live in, and a missing <td> wrapper leaves a cell's content floating loose in the row — which is exactly why reading the raw source, not just looking at the rendered page, is the only reliable way to catch them. The data in the page: Web Design 8 weeks R2 000 HTML, CSS; AI Basics 10 weeks R3 200 Python, TensorFlow, AI Simulators; Game Development 12 weeks R3 000 Unity, C#, Blender; Computer Literacy 6 weeks R1 500 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows; Mobile App Development 10 weeks R2 800 Android Studio, Java, Kotlin.

6_1Home.html

The home page has comments numbered 6.1.1 to 6.1.6 marking where changes were expected. Which parts of the code are wrong or incomplete?

Show the faults
  1. 6.1.1 – head: <title></title> is empty. A valid page needs title text, e.g. <title>TechnoGeek</title>.

  2. 6.1.2 – body: check that the body opens and closes correctly (the file has <body> and </body></html> at the end).

  3. 6.1.3 – heading: <h1><font size="10" face="Corbel">. Font size on the sheet only goes from 1 to 7, so size="10" is invalid. Use a value from 1 to 7 if the task wants a size change.

  4. 6.1.4 – image: <img src="6_1Head.png"/></br>. The break tag is wrong: </br> must be <br/>. The image also has no alt text, and may need width, centering or other attributes as asked.

  5. 6.1.5 – line and contact block: <hr color="#838C99"/> is valid but the sheet shows colour as hexadecimal without #, e.g. color='ff0000'. The contact lines use </br> again (should be <br/>), and the <img src="6_1Tech.png" align="right"> has no closing slash or alt text.

  6. 6.1.6 – website: www.technogeek.org is plain text. It should be a hyperlink: <a href="http://www.technogeek.org">www.technogeek.org</a>. The e-mail line should likewise be <a href="mailto:info@technogeek.org">info@technogeek.org</a>.

  7. Footer: "2025 TechnoGeek Institution. All rights reserved." probably wants a copyright symbol, written as &copy;.

Why this earns the marks

I could not see the question paper for this set, so these are the faults visible in the code against the tag sheet. They are the same families as Question 6: wrong closing tags, text outside the right container, missing links, missing alt text — which is deliberate: these two TechnoGeek pages exist specifically to give you more practice spotting the same categories of mistake the real Question 6 tests, just arranged differently, so recognising the pattern here transfers directly. </br> instead of <br/> is a nesting-direction error (treating a self-closing tag as if it needed an open/close pair the wrong way round); a size or colour value outside the tag sheet's allowed range or format (like size="10" on a 1–7 scale, or a hex colour missing its #) is a valid-looking but technically wrong attribute value; and plain text where a hyperlink was expected is a reminder that HTML never auto-detects things that merely look like a link or an email address — every one has to be explicitly wrapped in an <a href="..."> tag to actually function as one.
